Double terminated 18 faceted quartz crystals were found in Herkimer NY in the 18th century and because of their clean natural facets and high clarity they were given the name "Herkimer Diamonds". Now similar beautiful 18 faceted crystals have been found in many places around the world. Technically only the stones found in a certain regain of NY can properly bear the name "Herkimer Diamond" (just like the use of the word "Champagne" is reserved in many countries only for sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France).
